Mr. Stewart was born in Salina, Kansas and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Oriental Languages from the University of Michigan in 1948, before graduating from University of Michigan School of Law in 1950. He was admitted to practice in 1950, and in 1951 joined the former Boyer, Donaldson & Stewart firm, which merged with Gilliland & Hayes in 2002. He is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Kansas and the United States District Court for Kansas. His active practice has been devoted to healthcare, business, corporate and probate law. Currently, he is of counsel with the firm, where he regularly advises clients regarding business and corporate matters, estate planning and estate administration. He has assisted in and provided legal services to incorporate numerous nonprofit organizations and to obtain tax-exempt status. An early advocate of alternative dispute resolution in the state of Kansas and the City of Wichita, he is a founder and past Director of the Mediation Center of Wichita and was a charter member of the Kansas Bar Association Alternate Dispute Resolution Section and the Supreme Court ADR Advisory Council. He serves on the Hospital Ethics Committee at Wesley Medical Center and sits on several nonprofit Boards, including Kansas Health Ethics and Wichita Medical Research and Education Foundation. He lectures to doctors, nurses and other groups on the subject of medical ethics. Mr. Stewart is a member of the Kansas Bar Association and a Life Member of the Wichita Bar Association, where he received its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. Other honors have included an Outstanding Service Award from the Kansas Bar Association (1991); Quality of Life Award from Wesley Medical Research Institutes (1993); and the Howard and Jeanne Johnston Award for Global Community Citizenship (2002).
Mr. Stewart is Conference
Attorney for the Kansas-Oklahoma Conference of the United Church of Christ
and has served on the governing boards of the state conference and also the
national denomination. He is past Moderator of both the conference and the
national church. He is also fluent in Japanese. |
